This is a support-focused Data Engineer (IBM DataStage) role within an applications managed services team, responsible for the stability, performance, and reliability of a critical Oracle-based ETL environment. You will act as a key technical owner for DataStage, providing L2/L3 production support, monitoring and recovering batch workloads, and troubleshooting complex issues across DataStage jobs and Oracle databases. The role offers deep exposure to enterprise data integration patterns and the chance to make a tangible impact on the quality and timeliness of data underpinning finance, reporting, and analytics.

What you’ll do
  • Provide L2/L3 production support for the IBM DataStage ETL environment, including incident management, problem resolution, and root cause analysis for job failures, performance issues, and data quality incidents.
  • Monitor daily, monthly, and quarterly DataStage batch workloads via DataStage Director / Operations Console and enterprise scheduling tools; respond to alerts, manage job dependencies, and ensure timely completion of loads into Oracle-based data warehouses and marts.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex ETL issues involving Oracle sources/targets, including SQL errors, constraint violations, table locks/deadlocks, space issues, and data mismatches between source and target systems.
  • Perform data validation, reconciliation, and ad-hoc queries in Oracle to investigate data discrepancies, support incident triage, and confirm successful recovery after job re-runs or fixes.
  • Manage and maintain DataStage environment stability: start/stop services, clear job locks and hung processes, manage projects and environment variables, and coordinate with infrastructure teams on server, storage, and network issues affecting ETL.
  • Support patching, minor upgrades, and configuration changes for DataStage and related Oracle connectivity (ODBC/native clients), including testing in lower environments and assisting with production deployments under change control.
What we’re looking for
  • 3+ years’ hands-on experience in a production support role for IBM DataStage (v11.x or later) in an enterprise environment, with a strong focus on L2/L3 support.
  • Solid understanding of DataStage architecture and components (Director, Operations Console, jobs, sequences, environment variables, logging) and how to monitor, troubleshoot, and recover production workloads.
  • Strong Oracle database skills: ability to write and tune SQL queries, read execution plans, and understand Oracle objects (tables, indexes, partitions, materialised views) as they relate to ETL loads and performance.
  • Proven experience troubleshooting ETL issues between DataStage and Oracle, including constraint violations, deadlocks, space issues, data type mismatches, and performance bottlenecks in both DataStage jobs and Oracle SQL.
  • Practical experience with DataStage operational tasks: starting/stopping services, clearing job locks, managing projects, configuring environment variables, and coordinating with infrastructure teams on server/OS issues.
  • Familiarity with batch scheduling and monitoring tools (e.g., Control-M, Tivoli, Airflow, or similar) and how DataStage jobs are orchestrated in enterprise environments.
  • Experience working within an ITIL-based managed services model, including incident, problem, and change management processes, SLAs, and on-call or after-hours support as required.
  • Relevant IBM DataStage or Oracle database certifications or formal training.
  • Experience with Snowflake and dbt highly desirable.
  • Experience with EDW, Cognos, and Power BI desirable.
