Junior Technician

About the role

An established electronic and communications contractor is seeking a motivated, hands-on Junior Technician for a new full-time position based in Sydney, NSW.

This is not an office-based IT support role.

If you enjoy computers, networking and technology but want to take those skills beyond the help desk and into a practical, hands-on career, this could be the opportunity for you.

You will learn how technology systems are installed end to end — from the physical cabling and infrastructure behind the system, through to the equipment, network connection, configuration, testing and final commissioning.

Working alongside experienced technicians, you will receive practical, hands-on training across structured cabling, fibre optics, networking, communications infrastructure and connected technology systems.

Your day-to-day work will be varied and predominantly hands-on and site-based. You won't be expected to know all of this when you start — that's the point of the role.

Key responsibilities

• Assisting with running and installing structured data and fibre cabling

• Installing cable pathways and communications infrastructure

• Terminating and testing data outlets, patch panels and cabling

• Assisting with fibre optic cabling, termination and testing

• Installing and fitting out communications cabinets

• Installing network equipment, Wi-Fi access points and connected devices

• Mounting CCTV cameras and other field devices

• Assisting with electronic access control, nurse call and audio visual systems

• Testing cabling and installed equipment

• Assisting with system testing and commissioning

• Developing skills in equipment configuration, networking, troubleshooting and fault finding

• Learning to diagnose faults from the physical cabling layer through to the network and connected system

About you

We're more interested in your attitude and aptitude than a long list of qualifications.

• Genuine interest in computers, networking, cabling and technology

• Practical, hands-on and comfortable using basic hand tools

• Comfortable with PC hardware and keen to develop your networking knowledge

• Enjoy troubleshooting and working out why something isn't working

• Interested in learning the physical installation side of technology

• Comfortable working onsite

• Good communication skills

• Reliable, willing to listen and willing to learn

• Comfortable working independently and as part of a team

• Take pride in your work

• Current Australian driver's licence

Previous IT experience, computer building or repair experience, networking, cabling or other hands-on technical experience would be advantageous, but is not essential.

You don't need to come from a trade background and you don't need years of IT experience.
