LEAD SPATIAL DATABASE ENGINEER

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead Phoenix's Data Systems and GIS capability. As Team Lead, you will play a pivotal role in shaping how data is managed, accessed, and used across the business. You'll lead a small but capable Data Systems team in a dual 50% management and 50% hands on role focusing heavily on spatial database architecture and the development of custom QGIS plugins. This role works closely with stakeholders throughout Phoenix and drives the development of the database and tools that support a diverse range of environmental projects. Combining hands on technical expertise, people leadership, and strategic influence, this role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex problems while helping others succeed.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor the Data Systems Team, including a Lead Developer, GIS Technician, and three GIS contributors embedded across the business

• Act as the key connection between the Data Systems Team and the wider organisation, ensuring business needs are understood and translated into practical data solutions

• Plan, prioritise, and deliver database development projects that support multiple teams and competing business requirements

• Design, develop, and improve an existing database and plugin user interfaces within a QGIS environment

• Hands on database development tasks to help speed up the overall development process

• Coordinate and oversee responses to database support and troubleshooting requests

• Coordinate the delivery of GIS-based figures and mapping outputs across the company

• Participate in and provide leadership through the Development Steering Group, helping shape the future shape and direction of Phoenix's data systems

About you

• An analytical approach to understanding complex datasets and systems

• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, to engage with end users, understand their needs, and translate them into effective technical solutions

• A collaborative leadership style with a willingness to mentor and develop the skills of others

• Experience designing, developing and maintaining database environments:

  • Python

  • QGIS

  • PyQT

  • Microsoft Access

  • SQL

  • PostgreSQL

• Degree qualification (or higher) in Data Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline

• Leadership or people management experience will be highly regarded
