About the Role:

We are looking for a motivated and ambitious individual to join us as a Rail Operator at our East Tamar Junction Depot in Launceston. In this position you will support loading operations, shunt trains and wagons, and marshal them according to the relevant manifest. Through hands-on training and experience, you will enhance your skills and gradually take on more responsibilities. You will be trained to perform safety checks in line with regulations and procedures and take responsibility for this as you develop in the role. This position offers valuable training and skills that can lead to exciting career opportunities in the rail industry. This position can be the first step to a long term career in Rail Operations and even be a step towards a career as a Train Driver. This role is on a rotating roster and includes weekend work. It is important that the successful applicant is comfortable with shift work.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

As a Rail Operator, you will:

  • Work under supervision as part of a collaborative team.

  • Maintain accurate records.

  • Engage in ongoing training to develop your rail operator skills and become a valued team member.

  • Learn to shunt trains and wagons and marshal them according to the appropriate plans.

  • Always Adhere to Work Health and Safety and Rail Safety requirements.

You will need to ensure you are able to meet and maintain medical criteria for a safety critical worker health assessment (Category 1) as prescribed by the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers.

This includes drug and alcohol screenscolour vision tests and assessments to determine risks associated with cardiac health and sleep apnoea

The successful candidate will be subject to a pre-employment medical and a national police check.  This role is scheduled to commence in November 2026.
