Technical Lead - Data & SQL Platforms

The successful candidate will lead the design, maintenance, availability, integrity, performance, and security of SQL Server environments, while providing technical guidance to developers, DBAs, project teams, and stakeholders. The role will also play a key part in shaping and documenting the Enterprise Data Model (EDM) required to support integration between new application services and reporting platforms being implemented within DFR.

This position is ideal for a senior data professional ready to operate as a technical lead, combining deep SQL Server expertise with enterprise architecture, stakeholder engagement, mentoring, and a willingness to work with emerging Microsoft data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on technical leader with a strong blend of SQL Server administration, database development, enterprise data architecture, and stakeholder engagement expertise. They will be comfortable providing technical direction, mentoring others, supporting critical production systems, and leading data modelling initiatives that enable seamless integration between enterprise applications and reporting services. Experience with Microsoft Fabric will be highly regarded; however, candidates with the willingness and aptitude to build capability across the Microsoft Fabric ecosystem will also be strongly considered.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Solution Direction

• Provide technical leadership across SQL Server, enterprise data modelling, integration, and reporting platform initiatives.
• Lead technical design discussions and provide guidance on database architecture, data structures, integration patterns, and performance optimisation.
• Mentor and support developers, DBAs, analysts, and project teams to uplift data platform capability and ensure best-practice delivery.
• Collaborate with business, architecture, application, integration, and reporting teams to translate requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Contribute to technical standards, documentation, governance practices, and continuous improvement across data platforms.

SQL Server Administration & Support

• Oversee the administration, maintenance, and support of Microsoft SQL Server environments across development, test, and production platforms.
• Monitor and guide improvements across database health, performance, storage utilisation, backups, and recovery processes.
• Support incident response, production troubleshooting, and on-call support requirements where required.
• Ensure database security, access controls, compliance requirements, patching, upgrades, migrations, and configuration changes are effectively managed

Database Development, Optimisation & Delivery

• Lead the design, development, review, and optimisation of SQL code, stored procedures, functions, views, and database objects.
• Drive performance improvement through query tuning, indexing strategies, capacity planning, and proactive database optimisation.
• Identify opportunities to improve database utilisation, scalability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
• Guide the development and optimisation of ETL processes, data integration solutions, and reporting data structures.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex data quality, performance, integration, and platform issues.

Enterprise Data Modelling & Integration

• Development and documentation of the organisation's Enterprise Data Model (EDM).
• Collaborate with business, application, integration, and reporting teams to define enterprise data structures and standards.
• Design conceptual, logical, and physical data models to support new application services and reporting capabilities.
• Ensure data models align with enterprise architecture principles, governance frameworks, and business requirements.
• Support integration initiatives by defining data relationships, mappings, and transformation requirements.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive data dictionaries and metadata documentation.

Reporting, Analytics & Microsoft Data Platform Enablement

• Support reporting and analytics platforms by ensuring data is high-quality, accessible, well-structured, and aligned to business needs.
• Work closely with BI and reporting teams to optimise database and data platform structures for reporting workloads.
• Contribute to data governance, master data, metadata, and data quality practices.
• Bring exposure to, or a willingness to develop capability in, Microsoft Fabric and related services such as Data Engineering, Data Warehousing, OneLake, pipelines, and analytics workloads

Required experience

• Demonstrated experience in a senior SQL Developer, SQL Server DBA, Data Platform Lead, Technical Lead, or similar database-focused role.
• Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server administration, development, optimisation, and support within enterprise environments.
• Advanced SQL scripting skills including stored procedures, triggers, functions, and performance tuning.
• Experience managing database backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions.
• Experience with data modelling methodologies, including conceptual, logical, and physical data modelling.
• Strong understanding of data integration principles and enterprise data architecture.
• Experience developing and maintaining Enterprise Data Models (EDM).
• Proven capability in database performance optimisation and capacity planning.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent documentation, stakeholder engagement, technical leadership, mentoring, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to lead technical discussions, influence solution design, and work collaboratively across business, architecture, application, integration, and reporting teams

Desirable experience

• Experience with Azure SQL, Azure Data Services, or cloud-based database platforms.
• Experience with Microsoft Fabric, or a genuine willingness to learn, including Data Engineering, Data Warehousing, OneLake, pipelines, and analytics services.
• Experience supporting enterprise reporting and Business Intelligence environments.
• Knowledge of data governance, master data management, and metadata frameworks.
• Experience with ETL tools and data integration technologies.
• Exposure to enterprise architecture frameworks and large-scale digital transformation programs
