About the Company

Our client is a well-established, privately owned Australian business in the civil construction and infrastructure space. More than two decades in operation, with a solid reputation in their field and a multi-entity group structure that has delivered sustained double-digit growth over a number of years. As the business has grown, the finance function has grown with it, and they're now investing in the right senior support to carry it through the next phase.

About the Role

This is a true number-two to the Head of Finance, a hands-on role with full ownership of the day-to-day finance function. You'll run the month-end close, balance sheet integrity, statutory reporting and the transactional team, with the autonomy to shape how things are run rather than inheriting someone else's playbook.

There's a substantial build agenda in front of you: modernising payroll, standing up CAPEX and asset governance from the ground up, moving the group toward general purpose financial statements, and putting a proper reporting layer in place. This is a seat where the work you do changes how the function operates.

And refreshingly for the sector, work/life balance here is real and protected. They mean it, and they want someone who values it too.

Responsibilities
  • Full ownership of the month-end close, including timetable, journals, reconciliations and P&L delivery for review;
  • Balance sheet integrity across a multi-entity group, including intercompany, accruals and key control accounts;
  • Statutory compliance and reporting, supporting the transition toward general purpose financial statements (Tier 2);
  • Oversight of the transactional finance team across AP/AR and payroll, with hands-on support where it's needed;
  • Payroll oversight and modernisation, including digitising time and attendance and embedding award/EA interpretation logic;
  • Standing up CAPEX and fixed asset governance, and bringing the registers into a single reconciled source of truth;
  • Treasury support, including cashflow reporting and working capital monitoring; and
  • Mentoring and developing a small team while driving process and system improvement across the function.
Ideal Background
  • CA/CPA qualified;
  • Demonstrated ownership of month-end close in a hands-on commercial environment;
  • Ideally a mix of both worlds: the discipline and best practice of a larger commercial business, paired with the agility and breadth of a smaller, full-function environment;
  • Sufficient payroll understanding to oversee processing and provide end-to-end cover where required;
  • Familiarity with Jobpac or a similar construction-focused ERP, multi-entity consolidations and AASB 15 & 16 (desirable); and
  • A systems and process-improvement mindset, comfortable operating autonomously.
Benefits
  • A second-in-command seat reporting to the Head of Finance, with the autonomy that comes with it;
  • Real scope to build and improve, rather than simply keeping the lights on;
  • An established, privately owned business that's growing and well regarded in its field;
  • Conveniently located in Sydney's Ryde area, close to transport with parking nearby; and
  • Work/life balance that's actively supported, not just talked about.
