Are you a commercially minded finance professional who thrives in a fast-paced SME environment?

On behalf of our client, a successful and growing SME, we are seeking a commercially minded Financial Controller to lead their finance function.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-growth, privately owned business where you’ll work directly with the Managing Director and play a key role in shaping financial strategy and operational excellence.

As the Financial Controller, you will take ownership of the finance function, lead a team of five, and drive continuous improvement across systems, reporting, compliance, and automation. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being hands-on while also influencing commercial outcomes.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead full-function finance operations across the business

• Prepare monthly management reports, P&L reconciliations, and financial analysis

• Deliver cash flow forecasting and commercial insights to support growth

• Manage end-to-end payroll for approximately 80 employees through Employment Hero

• Oversee weekly payment runs, BAS lodgements, fuel tax credits, and year-end work papers

• Mentor and develop a finance team of five

• Drive process improvements and leverage AI and automation to enhance reporting efficiency

• Manage and optimise internal finance systems, including Xero

About You

• CA or CPA qualified (mandatory)

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance role within an SME environment

• Strong experience across full-function finance, compliance, and payroll

• Advanced proficiency with Xero and Microsoft Office

• Understanding of company structures, trusts, and statutory obligations

• A passion for technology, automation, and AI-driven efficiency

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate financial data into practical business insights
